The festival of “Puthandu” and “Vishu” heralds the beginning of the traditional New Year for the natives of Tamil Nadu and Kerala respectively. This day marks the Sun’s transit into first zodiac house, Aries or “Mesha Rashi” and generally falls on 13th or 14th April, every year. Vishu literally means equal in Sanskrit, and in the festival context it connotes the completion of spring equinox. Vishukkani is the first sight on Vishu day and lot of care is taken while arranging the items in a metal vessel. The traditional belief is that the New Year will be better if one views auspicious joyful things as the first thing on Vishu day. The vessel contains a panorama of religious auspicious items like holy book or Bhagwat Gita, rice, vegetables, fruits, gold coins, and betel leaves along with a mirror made of metal. All these items are placed before Lord Krishna and special prayers are offered seeking his blessings on this auspicious day.
